Description

Drummer Sherri Maricle and altoist John Mastroianni (who doubles on soprano) are joined by pianist Roger Kellaway, bassist Michael Moore and vibraphonist Peter Appleyard for a high-quality straight-ahead jazz date that leaves some room for adventurous moments. Mastroianni is a Phil Woods-influenced altoist who is heard at his best on a rapid version of “Scrapple From The Apple” while Maricle is a solid drummer who gets a fair share of brief solo breaks and pushes the ensembles. Appleyard is showcased on “Sophisticated Lady” and Moore is quite supportive of the soloists. However, it is Kellaway who consistently emerges as the star of the disc, taking some very abstract choruses on “Scrapple,” swinging a la Oscar Peterson on Thad Jones’ “Three And One” and playing with fire throughout the easily recommended CD.
